I never thought of short stories as palette cleansers, but that’s exactly how I read them sometimes and also, when I’m just sort of fed up with the novels I’ve been reading. Thanks for sharing the link!

I confess that I have also used short stories as literary palette cleansers, but I have also come to be a little protective of them when they are viewed as a “lesser” art form (I.e. one which could be used as “merely” a palate cleanser between more important reading). I admit this is because of my Deal Me In project, which I have come to enjoy as much as any other reading I do. What I’ve come to really appreciate is the concept of a “single sitting” read. Each short story is a separate “entertainment event” for me, AND it can fit into a busy schedule. 🙂
